‘Smoke’: Ayla Tavares

The Brazilian artist presents a site-specific installation with Hatch Gallery and Galeria Athena at Frieze London 2024

Ayla Tavares’s process involves equal amounts of craft, intuition and physicality. Presented jointly in Smoke by Hatch Gallery and Galeria Athena, her new commission Witnesses is a site-specific installation that unifies different temporalities. Tavares offers a unique perspective on the concepts of borders and migration in her works, seeing ceramics as a living medium engaged in a continuous exchange with its surrounding environment. At Frieze London, works from Tavares’s significant series ‘Sonantes’ and ‘Materia Materia’ emanate from a single spiral-shaped pedestal, guiding the viewer towards a place of unity.
