Returning for the third year at Frieze Masters, Laura Hoptman's section Spotlight celebrates the luminaries of 20th-century art
The celebrated Spotlight section, dedicated to pioneers of avant-garde art from across the world and curated by Laura Hoptman (Executive Director of The Drawing Center, New York), returns to Frieze Masters this October.
Featuring solo presentations of work by overlooked figures and rarely seen practices by modern masters, Spotlight champions a diverse group of artists.
From video works by visionary artist Woody Vasulka (Berg Contemporary), to intricate woven works by Franca Sonnino (Repetto Gallery), to Nigerian modernist painter Obiora Udechukwu (kó), to works by Paraguayan visual artist Feliciano Centurión (Galeria Millan), this year's Spotlight brings together 28 international galleries exhibiting works by ground-breaking artists of the 20th century spanning painting, photography, sculpture, drawing and conceptual installation.
This year's highlights include:
Pioneering Italian figures such as Santi Alleruzzo (SpazioA), Luigi Boille (Ronchini Gallery), Gastone Novelli (Matteo Lampertico), Remo Bianco (Galleria d'Arte Tommaso Calabro), and Franca Sonnino (Repetto Gallery).
American pioneers, like cross-disciplinary artist Nancy Graves (Ceysson & Bénétière); abstract paintings by Beauford Delaney (Michael Rosenfeld Gallery); photographic and video works by Peter Campus (Cristin Tierney Gallery); unique paintings by Roger Brown (Kavi Gupta); and photo works by Nancy Holt (Parafin).
Radical painters including A. Ramachandran (Vadehra Art Gallery), the renowned modernist from Kerala, India; Huguette Caland (Kayne Griffin), one of Lebanon's best-known women artists; Farid Belkahia (Selma Feriani Gallery), a key figure in Moroccan modernism; and surrealist French-Mexican poet and painter Alice Rahon (Gallery Wendi Norris).
Plus diverse and pioneering figures from around the world, including Korean artist Soun-Gui Kim (Arario Gallery) with her ‘One Stroke of Painting’ series from 1975 to 1987; Cruzeiro Seixas (Perve Galeria), a major exponent of Portguese Surrealism; Barbara Levittoux-Świderska (Richard Saltoun Gallery), the avant-garde artist who transformed the Polish textile tradition and tapestry.
