At the second edition of Frieze Seoul, the Focus Asia Stand Prize 2023 has been awarded to CYLINDER (Seoul, Korea, Stand F6) for their solo presentation of Sinae Yoo. The artist has created an installation consisting of a new series of works including an altarpiece and smaller votive-like paintings that are unveiled from behind curtains, the series collectively titled ‘Post Truth’, exploring how the concept has become increasingly relevant in our modern society, where objective facts are often dismissed in favour of subjective beliefs and opinions.
The jury of institutional directors and curators included Chris Lew (C/O: Curatorial Practice), Alvin Li (Tate) and Jam Acuzar (Independent Curator). An honourable mention was given to Marco Gallery’s booth of work by Yoshimura Taichi. Focus Asia is a dedicated section of the fair showcasing ten solo artist presentations from Asia-based galleries, opened in or after 2011.
Dooyong Ro, Director of Cylinder said: ‘We are delighted to win the debut Focus Asia Stand Prize, and are so pleased that our solo presentation of Sinae Yoo has been so well received. This is our first year showing at Frieze Seoul and it couldn’t have gone any better.’
Tina Kim Gallery (New York, US, Stand B9) was awarded the Stand Prize in recognition of their booth featuring works by innovative artists including Mire Lee, Suki Seokyeong Kang, Minouk Lim, Maia Ruth Lee and more. The gallery was selected by a jury comprised of industry figures which included Juli Yoon (Ilmin Museum), Sung woo Kim (Primary Practice) and Serena Sungah Choo (Leeum Museum of Art). Honourable mentions were given to Goodman Gallery and Jessica Silverman.
Gallerist Tina Kim said, ‘I am honored to receive the Frieze Stand Prize. Ever since the end of the inaugural Frieze Seoul last year, my team and I have been working hard to incorporate what we learned and observed. We wanted to curate a booth that is a reflection of my program while considering the unique audience that Seoul draws, as well as artists and ideas I have always been committed to. Frieze Seoul reaffirms my belief that fairs are successful when they invest in regional markets and cultivate a new audience.’
