Filmmaker David Lynch will create a Twin Peaks virtual reality experience, it has been announced by Showtime, an American cable and satellite TV network, and Collider Games, an online source for movie and television news.

Twin Peaks VR will allow players to explore locations from the original series (1990–1991) as well as Twin Peaks: The Return, the 18-part mystery-horror sequel that aired on Showtime in 2017 to critical acclaim.

Confirmed locations include Glastonbury Grove, a fictional site in the forest surrounding the town of Twin Peaks, and the iconic, extra-dimensional ‘red room’. The VR experience will use quotations and sounds from the television series and will allow visitors to follow in the footsteps of Special Agent Dale Cooper, the protagonist of the series, as they ‘try to make their way back into the life they left behind.’

The American director and visual artist, famous for movies Blue Velvet (1986) and Mulholland Drive (2001), will debut the VR game at Festival of Disruption, a music, art, film and creativity event curated by Lynch. The festival will also include a lecture on meditation, delivered by Norman Rosenthal, a Q&A with Francis Ford Coppola, and ‘Fetish’, an exhibition by Lynch and high-end shoe designer Christian Louboutin.

Proceeds from the festival will go to the David Lynch Foundation, which supports at-risk populations through the Transcendental Meditation technique. The festival runs 13–14 October in Los Angeles.

Watch Lynch discuss the infinite possibilities of consciousness in Fourth State, a film specially-commissioned by frieze magazine for the themed ‘Altered States’ issue. And read the legendary filmmaker’s responses to the frieze Questionnaire.
