Born and raised in New York, Reverend Joyce McDonald battled addiction and a 1985 HIV diagnosis to be ordained as a minister. Using her own struggles as inspiration, McDonald creates intense, personal works, often incorporating found objects and materials to emphasize her pieces’ authenticity.

In her ongoing “Catachresis on paper” series, Amalia Pica focuses on the rhetorical device known as catachresis – the application of terms that apply to things that do not have their own word, such as the teeth of a comb, leg of a chair, tongue of a shoe or elbow of a pipe. Encompassing sculpture, performance, installation, video and drawing, Pica’s work examines systems of communication and what brings people together.

Beatriz Cortez, Five Point Feather Shield III, 2023

Feathers, cotton thread, steel, 47 x 50 x 3 cm. Presented by Commonwealth and Council. $9,000.

Cortez immigrated to the United States from El Salvador aged 18. Her work reflects this duality, as well as referencing both disputable pasts and imagined futures. She constructs sculptural machines that smack of an outmoded industrial world, along with wall works such as this one, using materials suggestive of arcane and/or ancient ritual.

Born in 1970, Hiroshi Sugito has been assiociated with the Toyko Pop art movement, though his meditative works, which incorprate both abstract and figurative elements, are also deeply indebted to Japanese painterly traditions and often use layers of paper bonded with glue.

Tao’s recent paintings survey human emotions and desires via lust, intimacy, dependency, violence and destruction, partly inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s poetry collection Les Fleurs du mal. Born in Wuhan, China, Tao addresses notions of sin and decadence, vice and virtue, and taboos associated with erotica.
