Celebrating Non-Profit Spaces at Frieze Week Seoul 2024

In collaboration with Arts Council Korea (ARKO), Frieze Seoul 2024 will highlight independent and artist-run spaces across the city

Frieze and Arts Council Korea (ARKO) have collaborated for the second year to showcase Seoul’s grassroots art scene, from artist-run and independent creative spaces to non-profit institutions. During Frieze Week, September 2–7, audiences will be invited to experience experimental art shows as well as major museum exhibitions across the city.

Frieze Seoul also coincides with Korea’s two major art biennials, and the Frieze Week programme will expand beyond Seoul to include non-profits from Gwangju and Busan.

Na Hyun, “Bongraesan-FORMOSA Project” at CR Collective

‘Bongnae-san-Formosa project’ is a sculptural experiment based on archival research into the legends of Qin Shi Huang's search for the elixir of life in Bongnae-san, and the plants found on a mythical island formally known as 'Formosa'.

Sajik Kim, ‘All life issues forth from the center of the circle’ at The Reference

The first solo exhibition in Korea by the artist Sajik Kim, a third-generation Korean living in Japan. Kim’s works are based on traditional Korean tales, blending Asian mythological beings with Western modern nationalism to explore contemporary themes around gender, family systems, religion and history.

‘Practicality and Prosperity’ explores how homes have served as both practical spaces and cultural artifacts, reflecting societal values and historical events from the influences of foreign cultures to incorporating traditional Korean motifs.

‘Platypuses and Unicorns’ explores our anthropocentric and taxonomical approach towards non-human beings. The artists question ‘who bends and traverses the lines and borders that divide species, flora and fauna, male and female?’

‘Untimely Resonance - Betwixt & Between Waves’ at Alternative Space LOOP

‘Untimely Resonance’ brings together sound-based works by five artists from different cultural backgrounds, each exploring various sound phenomena, from vocalization, music to speech.
