Nine works were acquired for the Tate collection at Frieze London 2016 via the Frieze Tate Fund, supported by Endeavor.

This October, five of those works have been installed for the first time within the permanent collection galleries of Tate Modern.

Clara M Kim, the Daskalopoulos Senior Curator, International Art (Africa, Asia and Middle East) said Tate were “thrilled” to have brought the “signature works” by Turkish artist Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin’s into Tate’s collection. “Alptekin is a critical figure in the Turkish art scene”, she explained “and our partnership with Frieze allows for important acquisitions like this to take place, enabling us to share his playful and poignant work with our audiences.”

The works are in the form of five hotel “referencing far flung places”, the curator explained. They are displayed on the landing of the Level 2 galleries in the Blavatnik building, “animating our beautiful new spaces while serving as a beacon from the exterior”, Kim said.

Other Frieze Tate Fund acquisitions in 2016 included works by Leonor Antunes and Phillip Lai.

The 2017 Frieze Tate Fund acquisitions will be made at Frieze London and announced during the fair.
