Dorothy Iannone’s A Cookbook was created in 1969 and features hand-written recipes and patterned drawings in her idiosyncratic style. As well as recipes, the book contains personal reflections. ‘I’ve got the papers and we can get married now. I don’t think I want to anymore’ accompanies a recipe for Sauce Madeira; instructions for preparing gazpacho note that ‘At least one can turn pain to colour’; while lentil soup appears with the thought, ‘Dorothy’s spirit is like this: green and yellow’. A new edition of the artist’s cookbook, published by JRP|Editions, has just been released.
‘This is a cookbook’, the book begins. ‘Please read the remarks. This book was started as a collection of mostly favourite but also a few useful (what to do with whiting) recipes for when one who hadn’t a natural sense of cookery was on the road’.
‘Never cry while you cook’, Iannone advises.
Specially recommended recipes include tarragon spaghetti, moussaka, beef wellington, zuppa inglese and chicken and liver paté.
‘Electric stoves are no damn good’, Iannone warns.
‘It’s embarrassing to say one is a Leo’ the artist confesses.
‘I’m beginning to feel a tiny bit better’, one note reads.
