The human head. It sits way up at the top. A sphere-like shape. A roundish circle. High above this bouquet body, it is like a flower.
For this assignment, I thought I would set out into the city in the style of Bill Cunningham, our mentor from the New York Times. It’s that time of year: there are highs of 90-degrees, it’s Memorial Day weekend and anyone who isn’t travelling is outdoors. Manhattan and Brooklyn seem like an endless boardwalk of newly exposed jiggly bodies.
I first thought I would concentrate on baggage and general headwear, but the gentle occurence of ‘the hat’ took centre stage early on. I guess you could call it the non-religious cap. It’s everywhere.
And so we come to this flower, almost a body in its own right. The hat accentuates this.
The hat pops up like a bookmark. I wonder if it helps one to be read?
Maybe it’s nice that people often see the hat before the eyes – less distraction. Ahhhh, that can be helpful in such a crowded city, but making eye contact is a true thrill. Just look how beautiful these New Yorkers are!
Just watch out for the dogs!
