An insight into the 2019-20 Serpentine Digital Commissions
For the last five years, the Serpentine's Digital Commissions Programme has been experimenting with technology, commissioning pioneering artists with the goal of challenging and reshaping the role that technology can play in our culture and society.
In 2019, the team launched four new commissions. Jakob Kudsk Steensen’s The Deep Listener is an audio-visual ecological expedition through the Serpentine’s surroundings Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. Selected as the first of the Serpentine’s Augmented Architecture series, The Deep Listener was commissioned in collaboration with Google Arts & Culture and Sir David Adjaye OBE. Jenna Sutela’s I Magma, a ‘machine oracle’ co-commissioned with Moderna Museet, Stockholm weaves together ideas around psychedelia, mysticism and decentralised intelligence. Suzanne Treister’s From SURVIVOR (F) to The Escapist BHST (Black Hole Spacetime) takes the form of both a Web AR navigation tool for interplanetary travel accessed online here and a physical book, to exploring the possibilities of ‘inter-dimensional time-travel, consciousness and the singularity’.
