- Parisian dealer Kammel Mennour has announced that he will be establishing new space in London, which will be located at 51 Brook Street in Mayfair. The gallery will open on 4 October with a solo exhibition of Latifa Echakhch, a Morrocan-born artist whose work will also be presented in a solo display at Frieze London. In a statement, Mennour said: ‘My London gallery is extremely intimate. I don’t want to compete in a race for a huge super space.’
- Just two years after opening a project space in Los Angeles, Ibid Gallery is preparing to upsize to a 13,000-square-foot complex in the Boyle Heights neighbourhood, adjacent to Maccarone’s west coast outpost and the 365 Mission project space. The new gallery comprises three exhibition spaces, each of which will open on 25 September with solo exhibitions from David Adamo and Devin Farrand, and a group show, ‘Sleep’, curated by Paolo Colombo.
- The Sir John Soane’s Museum in London, the smallest UK museum with government funding, will unveil its seven-year, GBP£7 million restoration project to the public later today. The project, titled ‘Opening up the Soane’, has focused on restoring and preserving specific areas including the catacombs, the lobby, and the Apollo Recess, and will allow 10% more of Soane’s vast collection to be displayed.
- The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs has launched an initiative to improve diversity at major New York cultural institutions by financing paid internships at those organizations. The USD$1 million project, financed by the city and the Rockefeller Foundation, will place City University of New York students at institutions such as Carnegie Hall, MoMA PS1 and the Museum of Natural History.
- Following the likes of ShanghArt and Aike-Dellarco, Shanghai’s MadeIn Gallery is set to move from its space in the art compound at 50 Moganshan Lu (M50) to a premises on the West Bund. The new gallery will be located on the first floor of 2879 Longteng Avenue, and will open on 8 September with a group show of 15 aritsts titled ‘Information Sculpture Superhighway’.
- The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis has appointed Monica Nassif, founder and former CEO of Caldrea/Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day, as president of its board of trustees. In a statement, executive director Olga Viso said: ‘[Nassif’s] steadfast leadership and passion for the institution’s mission will be invaluable, especially as we complete the Walker campus renovation and Minneapolis Sculpture Garden reconstruction this spring.’
